THE WITNESS

This song serves to set the tone for the rest of the playlist. I feel that The Witness by Blaqk Audio has the futuristic and electronic mood appropriate for Tron.

EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD

"So glad we've almost made it / So sad they had to fade it / Everybody wants to rule the world."
This song is reminiscent of the rivalry between Kevin Flynn and Edward Dillinger. As Flynn describes, "enter Ed Dillinger. Another software engineer, not so young, not so bright, but very, very sneaky... We now take you to three months later. Ed Dillinger presents ENCOM with five videogame he has 'invented'; the slime didn't even change the names." Flynn and Dillinger are constantly in wordless war over the stolen video games Flynn invented. Flynn continues using his access from when he worked at ENCOM in an attempt to find the evidence, until Dillinger notices and closes all access at that level.

RADIO/VIDEO

"Hey man, look at me rockin' out, I'm on the radio / Hey man, look at me rockin' out, I'm on the video"
The attachment to this song is quite literal-- Flynn ends up trapped in the ENCOM computer system, so basically he's on the radio, he's on the video.

EVERYTHING SHE WANTS

"And everything you want, and everything you see / Is out of reach, not good enough / I don't know what the hell you want from me, oh"
The MCP is a computer program sponsored by Dillinger. It works independently of itself, overseeing almost all of ENCOM's technology. It was created as a chess program, and it grew from there. As Dillinger faults himself for the MCP's desire, it tells him, "And I was planning on hitting the Pentagon next week." It always wants more, just as it has tapped into the systems of many other corporations, as well as the Kremlin.

DANCING THROUGH SUNDAY

"And we dance on, and we dance on (Oh, we dance in misery) / Lost in the arms of our misery, oh (Oh, we dance in misery) / And we dance on, and we dance on / Swept off our feet by our misery, we're swept into shadows"
To me, this song is reminiscent of Flynn's determination to retrieve what's been taken from him, despite the bleakness of his situation, and Dillinger's attempts at hiding it. He works tirelessly, writing programs in an attempt to break into the system and get the evidence that proves what Dillinger did to him.

NARRATIVE OF SOUL AGAINST SOUL

"A permanent solution / To a temporary problem / Before I'd lay me down to rest / I'd throw away everything to live"
Tron as a character is a valiant warrior. He fights for the Grid, its users, and its programs alone. "Tron stretched forth his hand and his disk came to it obediently. He stood alone... knowing that User-Believers and Reds alike were gazing down on him, letting the combat speak for itself." Written by Alan in the real world, he sees Alan, his User, as a deity, and fights for his fellow imprisoned programs in the honor of his strong convictions.

THERE'S A GOOD REASON

"I'm the new cancer, never looked better, you can't stand it / Because you say so under your breath / You're reading lips, 'When did he get all confident?'"
This song is very reminiscent of the Master Control Program, referred to from here on forward as the MCP. It is a sentient computer program that has grown from the ground up, to the point where it has control over both the human and program worlds. It uses this power to control Dillinger and Sark, as well as bring Flynn to the grid world-- the latter represented by the line "from that moment, you'll be out of place and underdressed" in the song. It uses its power to get control of the things and people it wants, with both force and manipulation.

SHERLOCK (CLUE + NOTE)

"You don’t exist in front of me right now / I know that for sure but I’m going to interrogate you"
I felt this song would be fitting to finish the playlist thematically, as an anthemic sendoff. Though this song is a love song, many of the lyrics can be interpreted as Flynn and his undying need to find the truth of where the evidence to Dillinger's crime is. The music video also applies here, in my opinion, as it shows the SHINee members in an almost unreal reality, just as Flynn has been taken to the Grid.
